Unlike our editor, Ligaya Mishan, I have yet to finish “2666” and probably won't before the month's end. The first thing I'll say is it took me a very long time to get through this book. And this is probably why, out of all the 'books' in 2666, I liked Book II best. According to his heirs, Roberto Bolaño left instructions that his final work, 2666, should be published as five separate novels, each corresponding to one of the sections of the book as it appears today. Published a year after his death and translated into English a few more years later, it is an enormous book that defies summary. This is the issue that Roberto Bolano sets up in his novel 2666. You can't talk about 2666 without mentioning the book design. 898 pages, Farrar, Straus and Giroux. Facetious, I know, but hey, I got through the book. A few weeks ago I said that I was considering doing the group read of Robert Bolano's novel 2666. This is as good a notion as any when thinking about Roberto Bolaño's monstrous novel 2666. As I was reading the passage in Bolaño's novel 2666 on page 40 through 41 I was reminded of the article from the New York Times we read last week entitled, “Analyzing Literature and Words by Numbers”. I can imagine that as a book 2666 would present a huge challenge to me, because it's very testing in places.
